Language
The demographics of students vary across different schools and classes. Some students may prefer to converse with you in English or their respective mother tongues. This may include Bahasa Melayu, Mandarin, Tamil, or their own Orang Asli languages. Some tips for smoother communication include:
Simple language: If the student needs help understanding you, try using simple words, short sentences or multiple languages. Our Fellow/Alumni/Duta Guru will share the best practices when communicating with their students.
Use visuals: If a student is having trouble understanding, try using pictures, diagrams or even hand gestures. Visual aids can often bridge language barriers effectively.
Active listening: Pay close attention to their body language and facial expressions. Sometimes, non-verbal cues can give a better idea if they are understanding or not.
Encourage questions: Let the students know that it is okay to ask questions if they are unsure. Create an open and supportive environment that promotes dialogue.
Relate to their interests: If you can tie the conversation to something they are interested in, it can make the topic more relatable and engaging.
